Guest Apartments for the Court of Napoleon III

Napoleon III and Eugenie’s visits to the château brought together visitors from a wide social circle, no longer just courtiers. Their visitors were accommodated in luxurious apartments with all contemporary mod cons and rooms laid out in the style of a grand hotel.

Apartment no.48, situated on the second floor above the antechamber to Napoleon I’s inner apartment, overlooks the Jardin de Diane. Its location implies that it would generally be allocated to guests in the imperial couple’s intimate circle. The walls, decorated with bold blue-flowered paper used in guest apartments elsewhere in the château, match the bed linens and upholstery. The mahogany furniture, porcelain toilette accoutrements from Sèvres, office furnishings, lighting features, and wooden chest are a good indication of the level of bourgeois comfort that the sovereigns’ guests enjoyed. A hundred or so similar apartments would have been available at this time.
