The Cour Ovale

The oldest courtyard in the Château, the Cour Ovale’s mediaeval features are still visible today. The central square keep is still completely intact, now surrounded by buildings dating from the reigns of Francis I and Henry IV. This was the château’s main courtyard up until the 17th century ; a major event took place here, from which it took its name, i.e. the baptism of the future king Louis XIII. . A commemorative gate was built at the request of his father, King Henry IV, to mark this ceremony.
