The Cour Ovale

The Cour Ovale more or less marks the position of the original Château de Fontainebleau (aside from slight changes to the layout at the end of the Renaissance). It is the central point from which all of the buildings fanned outwards from the keep. Lined with 16th and 17th century facades, it opens to the south through the former fortified entrance (the Porte Dorée). Since Henry IV’s time it has also opened to the east onto the Cour des Offices (Baptistry entrance).
