The MonkeyBird duo<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Trained at the Bordeaux School of Applied Arts, the MonkeyBird artist duo of Edouard Egea and Louis Boidron, now based in Avon, draw their inspiration from architectural motifs, sculptures and prints, to create complex wefts punctuated with symbols that speak of man and his history. Their preferred technique, stencilling, enables them to repeat a motif with great finesse of detail. The result is a sophisticated aesthetic that is an invitation to contemplation and reflection. With their fetish animals, the monkey and the bird, the duo explore the hidden side of our humanity: man, a social animal, is symbolized in all his existential duality, driven by instinct and motivated by conscience. For the palisade at the Ch\u00e2teau de Fontainebleau, MonkeyBird drew on a vast iconographic repertoire, including Antoine-Laurent Castellan’s Etudes pittoresques et historiques sur Fontainebleau (1840), Georges-Fran\u00e7ois-Antoine Robit’s engraved albums (1812) and Rodolphe Pfnor’s (1866), as well as the sales catalog for Rosa Bonheur’s painted work (Galerie Georges Petit, 1905). Their totem animals, the monkey and the bird, were inspired by the Triomphe de Mars tapestry after Jules Romain (1499-1546) and the Concerts d’oiseaux by Frans Snyders (1579-1657).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An artistic creation inspired by the ch\u00e2teau<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This several-metre-long work celebrates wildlife, architecture and nature. Alternating picturesque landscapes and palatial settings, rustic exteriors and precious interiors, the MonkeyBird duo of artists Edouard Egea and Louis Boidron pay tribute to the Fontainebleau estate in all its diversity. To do so, they have drawn on the work of the artists who built, decorated or simply observed it. Starting with the landscape painter Antoine-Laurent Castellan (1772-1838), whose engraved work serves as the backdrop for his composition. Starting with his romantic drawings, in which archaeological concern is tinged with nostalgia, the duo punctuate the reading of their frieze with the richly ornamented arcades of the Chapelle de la Trinit\u00e9, enriched by the Mannerist painter Martin Fr\u00e9minet (1567-1619). Each bay is a pretext for new views of Rosa Bonheur’s (1822-1899) familiar animals frolicking about. Bringing together several emblematic figures from the Bellifontaine art scene through the ages, MonkeyBird creates a harmonious universe thanks to a graphic style that unites each element through the chiseling of its stencils. Using a sober palette dominated by black and white, he revives the technique of burin engraving. From afar, the presence of dark green refers to the Empire as much as to the foliage, while gold highlights trace the filigree of planes, voussures and architectural fixtures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In this new Eden, where nature and culture go hand in hand, the landscape is sometimes wild and forested, sometimes tamed and gardened. Man’s artifice mingles with the eclectic bestiary it hosts. Pavilions, fountains and other buildings bear witness to his presence in an attempt to commune with the place. Whether in ruins or in all its magnificence, the architecture here takes the form of a spatio-temporal shortcut, in which the vestiges and even the reminiscences of vanished buildings compete with the durability of the royal residence. Thus, on either side, the Egyptian Gate lost among the rocks responds to the classical facade of the ch\u00e2teau seen from its pond, while the Belle Eau fountain dialogues with the ruins of the kennel or the Cormier well. Through these imaginary confrontations, in the spirit of the “architectural caprices” inherited from the 18th century, the artists invite us to appreciate the symbiosis of art and nature as they unfold, renewing the grammar of panoramic settings and redefining their protagonists. At the center of the fresco, framed by the door of the Baptistery and watched over by two hermaphroditic pillars, is the forest – the origin of the Fontainebleau estate – not the main protagonist here?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Comment MonkeyBird est n\u00e9 ?<\/strong><\/h3>

Edouard<\/strong>\u00a0: On a cr\u00e9\u00e9 MonkeyBird \u00e0 Bordeaux pendant nos \u00e9tudes d\u2019arts appliqu\u00e9s, on s\u2019est rencontr\u00e9s dans notre ann\u00e9e de mise \u00e0 niveau. On a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 travailler ensemble le weekend et le soir. On travaillait chacun de notre c\u00f4t\u00e9 pour les cours et puis on a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 travailler ensemble, plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans le domaine de la rue. On avait chacun notre univers graphique alors on a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9unir nos styles pour cr\u00e9er un univers commun qui a \u00e9merg\u00e9 en 2009. On travaille sur la nature, sur le domaine du bestiaire.<\/em><\/p>

Louis<\/strong>\u00a0: Les oiseaux et les singes, d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but c\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment notre identit\u00e9, d\u2019o\u00f9 le nom MonkeyBird.<\/em><\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong>Edouard<\/strong>\u00a0: En fait on s\u2019est choisi un animal totem. Au lieu de choisir un nom de graffeur, on a voulu contrer un peu ce truc l\u00e0 et se dire\u00a0\u00ab on va plut\u00f4t choisir un animal qui nous est propre, pour lequel on a de l\u2019affection\u00a0\u00bb et puis on a choisi \u00e7a, et voil\u00e0, \u00e7a a commenc\u00e9 comme \u00e7a, assez naturellement.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Quelle a \u00e9t\u00e9 votre source d\u2019inspiration pour cette cr\u00e9ation sur la palissade ?<\/h3>

Edouard<\/strong>\u00a0: L\u2019id\u00e9e de faire une palissade ici, au ch\u00e2teau de Fontainebleau, c\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment de se nourrir de la richesse historique et culturelle qu\u2019il y a dans le ch\u00e2teau, de par ses archives, de par ses documents techniques tels que les documents d\u2019architecture, les livres de d\u00e9tails d\u2019ornementations des salles, etc. L\u2019id\u00e9e c\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment de puiser dans toutes ces r\u00e9f\u00e9rences, dans tout ce foisonnement d\u2019histoire et de culture regroup\u00e9 ici et d\u2019en faire quelque chose d\u2019unique. Emmener le spectateur dans notre univers mais \u00e0 la fois avec des clins d\u2019\u0153il plus que pouss\u00e9s au ch\u00e2teau, \u00e0 l\u2019histoire du ch\u00e2teau. Si les gens prennent le temps, il y a vraiment la possibilit\u00e9 de retrouver des \u00e9l\u00e9ments \u00e0 la fois sur la fresque et \u00e0 la fois \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du ch\u00e2teau. C\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment ce jeu-l\u00e0, r\u00e9interpr\u00e9ter de mani\u00e8re contemporaine, l\u2019id\u00e9e de la commande.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Est-ce parmi la fresque il y a une partie que vous avez pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 r\u00e9aliser ou au contraire une qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 plus compliqu\u00e9e ?<\/h3>

Edouard\u00a0<\/strong>: On l\u2019a approch\u00e9 en globalit\u00e9 et c\u2019est vrai que on a souvent des grosses commandes de grandes fresques, donc ce genre de format c\u2019est pour nous assez \u00e9vident en terme de travail. On l\u2019aborde avec passion et envie. \u00c7a se fait bien, on est content parce qu\u2019on on travaille bien, on a plut\u00f4t un bon rythme ici. \u00c7a se passe plut\u00f4t bien. <\/em><\/p>

Louis<\/strong>\u00a0: C\u2019est vraiment pratique de travailler ici parce qu\u2019il y a l\u2019atelier juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9, \u00e0 Avon. \u00c7a nous fait vraiment plaisir de travailler dans cet environnement car c\u2019est un endroit inspirant\u00a0: comme Edouard l\u2019a dit, il y a l\u2019architecture du ch\u00e2teau, mais on a aussi voulu mettre en avant la nature, qui nous inspire aussi beaucoup. Les jardins, les paysages, les animaux qu\u2019on retrouve sont des animaux qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 par exemple dans le parc comme les paons, ou les lions qui \u00e9taient chez Rosa Bonheur. C\u2019est parler aussi de toute cette histoire naturelle de la r\u00e9gion.<\/em><\/p>
