In 15th-century northern Europe, the widespread use of oil painting made it possible to render light, textures and naturalistic details with brilliance. Unlike the Italian painter, the Nordic painter describes the landscape through colours rather than lines and, through a meticulous rendering, gives life to the flesh of the figures without reference to ancient statuary.
