Outdoor activities

At different times of the year you can take horse-drawn carriage or train rides in the gardens, hire boats on the pond and discover the historic Jeu de Paume court.

Train rides

Explore the park at the château de Fontainebleau with the tourist train. An audioguide (French, French children's version, English, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese) is available.

Duration : 35 minutes

  • From April to mid-November, every day (except Tuesday) School holidays: open every day
  • Departs from the Cour d’Honneur every hour from noon onwards.
  • Adults: €7 / Children 4-18 years: €3 (free – under 4 years)              More than 20 people: €5 / person.

    (60 seats maximum, including group leader)

Go boating on the Carp pond like the monarchs and their court loved to. Boat hire is available:

  • From May to August: every day
  • April, September, October: closed on Mondays and Tuesdays
  • Access via the Cour de la Fontaine, from 10:30am
  • 30 minutes: €5 per person
  • 1 hour: €8 per person
  • Free for children under 3

Horse-drawn carriages

You can find Les Attelages de la Forêt de Fontainebleau at the top of the Grand Parterre near the Porte Dorée. They offer tours of the park every day.

Jeu de paume

Come and discover our Jeu de Paume court which was, along with hunting, one of the favourite pastimes for members of the Court. Built under Henri IV, it still has its original limestone tile floor.

Numerous expressions come from the "jeu de paume" court: “if you leave your place, you lose it, play to the gallery" etc.

Ferme de la Métairie

Ferme de la Métairie serves savoury galettes, sweet crepes and organic sorbet cones. The stand is open in the afternoon in fine weather, at weekends in April and May and then every day until the end of September*.


Café Paul in the Cour de la Fontaine serves sandwiches, salads and sweet treats to enjoy all day long. Open every day (except Tuesday), from 11am*.

Opening hours

The chateau

The chateau is open every day except Tuesday, January 1st, May 1st and December 25th.
From October to March: 9.30 am to 5 pm (last access at 4.15 pm).
From April to September: 9.30 am to 6 pm (last access at 5.15 pm).

Due to security works, some rooms of the Chateau will be closed successively all year long. We do apologise for the inconvenience.
