The monarchs’ grands apartments occupy the first floor of the château, the main floor given over to pageantry, ceremony, court life and the public demonstration of power. The successive refurbishments of these apartments by the monarchs, from the Renaissance to the 19th century, tell us about how they lived in, invested in and decorated this palace, all the while considering themselves in relation to the legacy of past centuries.
